A Few Points
Esteemed Readers :
Warm greetings !
Mr. Muhammad Hanif Shahzad from Muzaffargarh writes that in novels, whenever members of the secret service are captured, they are strapped to chairs—yet the number of chairs always exactly matches the number of captives. Do the criminals have a premonition regarding exactly how many of them will be caught, leading them to arrange precisely that many chairs?
To Mr. Muhammad Hanif Shahzad: the entire issue revolves around power—people will go to any lengths, even cut throats, for the sake of a seat of power. It is actually a mark of magnanimity on the part of these 'criminals' that they allow Imran and his associates to occupy those very seats; unless, of course, you expect them to contact a tent-rental service before apprehending Imran and his companions. After all, novels do not typically include every detail that exists in reality—only those essential to the flow of the story. I hope you understand the point.
Mr. Asfar Hussain writes from Mustafaabad, Lahore: "Some people believe that reading novels makes a person lazy and prone to living in a world of fantasy; however, I believe your novels are powerful enough to open one's eyes. They expose tragedies—both at home and abroad—from which one can draw valuable life lessons."
Mr. Asghar Hussain! I am deeply grateful to you for the distinction you have drawn in these few lines between a mere 'man' (*aadmi*) and a true 'human being' (*insaan*)—noting that while the former might become lethargic and lost in fantasy upon reading a novel, the latter’s eyes are opened by reading mine. It is gratifying to know that my novels are fulfilling the task of transforming a mere man into a true human being. There is a hemistich by Ghalib: "Even for a man, it is not easy to become a true human being." And indeed, in Ghalib's time, my novels were not available.
Wassalam,
Mazhar Kaleem, M.A.
